Dr. Vladimir Bračič, Cirkulane

Memorial Plaque at Cirkulana Večnamenske Courtyard, dedicated to Dr. Vladimir Bračič, educator, in the academic year 1958/59, as headmaster of Ptuj Gimnazija and Slovenian regional geographer-social researcher in Halozah and Podravje. He was a participant in NOB, a socio-political and cultural worker, multiple editor of the Journal of History and Ethnic Studies, organizer of Maribor higher school studies, first rector of Maribor University, and distinguished professor of Pedagogical Faculty in Maribor. »Mirko Polomski, fighter for freedom

In Polu, in 1941, Vladimir Bračič fell under the Italian occupation. Since Italians did not close down Slovene schools, he remained a teacher even during the ongoing school year and then in 1941/42. Under the pressure and violence of the occupiers against the Slovenian civilian population, as an aware Slovene patriot, he soon came to realize that one must resist. After disrupting the school in Polu, together with Halozah rojak Frančko Kozel, who had been illegally staying with him for a few months, in July 1942, he went to the partisans where he became an intelligence officer under the partisan name Mirko Polomski. It is interesting that Vladimir Bračič, known by many as Mirko Bračič, used this same partisan name Miran Bradač, a partisan commander who fell in battle in December 1943.

By September 1942, Vladimir Bračič was captured and sent to internment in Italy. For half a year, he spent time in the camp near Padua, then moved to the notorious camp on the island of Rab. After Italy's surrender, in September 1943, he returned to Slovenia and joined NOV units on the Primorska coast. He remained there until the end of the war, serving as a political commissar of the 19th Slovene National Liberation Assault Brigade Srečko Kosovel, then as a sub-officer school instructor in the 30th Division, instructor in an Italian brigade, public prosecutor in the 17th Brigade Simon Gregorčič, and political commissar of the sub-officer school in the 9th Corps.«

»At Cirkulana, two public landmarks commemorate Dr. Vladimir Bračič: a memorial plaque unveiled on the večnamenska courtyard in 1999 and an entrance stone discovered ten years later at Ptuj Elementary School. In 2009, his Bračičev Planinsko Trail was also established and marked, predominantly bordering the municipal boundary. In 2019, to mark the centenary of his birth, we also set up a memorial room in his birth home in the center of Cirkulana on September 27, 2019, on the anniversary day of Vladimir Bračič's birthday.«
