Dom Anice Černejeve

Anica Černej was arrested by the Germans in the autumn of 1943 and taken to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she fell ill. Despite her illness, she was the leader of imprisoned Slovene women. She died on May 3, 1944, in the subcamp of Neubrandenburg. Perhaps there was never a memorial on her house, at least the locals do not remember.

»Milena Mohorič, 39-year-old professor, after illegal activist work, internment and imprisonment – head of the education section of the SNOS leadership in the partisans. The text was written in the autumn of 1944 in Kočevski Rog, when the author learned that her friend Anica Černej had died in the German concentration camp Ravensbrück. It was published in her collection Samotni breg, 1947, p. 75. Fe 154.

On the path in the forest falls golden leaves
in the autumn wind the air whirls around us
only green moss is our shelter
secret time passes by us unnoticed. 
Look, the sun's ray has pierced through the branches
and reminded me of old shared days.
It was as if your smile warmed me
in the old fire your eyes shine. 
I remember how often we sat
under the blooming protection of the branches.
Outside, the white town was roaring –
life carried us forward. 
I see you before me, greeting me with a hand
sending a loyal message beyond golden borders –
The courier stepped up to me under the tree:
Do you know that Anica Černej has died?«
