Memorial Plaques at the Museum Peršmanhof

On April 25, 1945, shortly before the end of the war, the 13th SS Police Regiment murdered eleven people at the Peršmanhof: four adults (the property owners' couple, the old farmer's wife, and the owner's sister), and seven children (three children of the owners, two children of the owner's sister, and two children from the neighboring farm). The farmstead was almost completely burned down. Three children present at the scene survived, two of them seriously injured. The massacre at Peršmanhof is considered an end-phase crime, in which the National Socialists brutally targeted the civilian population suspected of supporting resistance. Today, the Peršmanhof is an important memorial site not only for the massacre, but also for the many Nazi crimes against the predominantly Slovene-speaking civilian population. In the years 1962 and 1982, the Partisan Association placed two – flawed – bilingual commemorative plaques on the house, which were corrected in 2,013. With the support of volunteers, it was possible to establish a museum in memory of the massacre in 1982. Since 1983, a group of figures from the exploded Völkermarkt Partisan Memorial stands in front of the museum. An annual commemoration event takes place at the farmstead in June.
