Memorial "Friedensoase" consisting of the Chapel of Remembrance Anna Bertha Königsegg and a Memorial Plaque for 123 murdered patients of Schloss Schernberg along with a Commemorative Stone

The memorial site “Friedensoase” was erected in the year 2011. The publicly accessible memorial and commemorative site consists of four elements: a glass memorial plaque, the memory chapel Anna Bertha Königsegg, a memorial stone, and a memorial book. They are meant to commemorate the events and the victims of the so-called “NS-Euthanasia” from the “Care Institution Schernberg”. Here, over a hundred residents were violently transported to the killing facility Hartheim against their will and despite the resistance of the nursing religious sisters and other staff members, under the leadership of Sr. Anna Bertha Königsegg in the year 1941. In the year 1993, the name was changed to St. Vinzenz Home. On initiative of a senior sister of the St. Vinzenz Home, the plan for a memory chapel in honor of Sr. Anna Bertha Königsegg was created in 1998. On September 8, 1999, during a festival for the residents of the St. Vinzenz Home, the chapel was blessed by the Provincial Director of the Sisters of Charity.
The memorial plaque inaugurated in the year 2011 names all 123 former residents from Schernberg who were violently deported by the National Socialists to Hartheim in 1941 and murdered there. The inscription reads: “In love, we remember the 123 victims of the NS regime. They were violently transported from Schernberg on April 21st and May 20th, 1941, and murdered in Hartheim (Upper Austria).” The memorial stone, erected in the year 2011, bears the inscription: “forgiveness brings peace.”
