In herdenken aan alle slachtoffers van het concentratiekamp Mauthausen is op de vroegere appelplaats een internationaal herdenkingsmonument in de vorm van een kenotaf opgericht en op 2.5.1949 aan de publieke opinie voorgesteld. De artistieke uitvoering is uitgevoerd door het Bundesdenkmalamt Wien en de architect Dittmann. Het is het eerste monument dat op het terrein van het vroegere concentratiekamp op een duurzame manier is geïnstalleerd.
