Memorial Stone for Deserters at the Property of the Health Center of the ÖGK

Until 2014, there was no memorial to the so-called "Sturm" of Goldegg. The aim of this raid on 2 July 1944 was to capture and arrest several Goldegger Wehrmacht deserters, some of whom had been hiding since the previous year. The two uninvolved Hochleitner brothers were murdered by the Gestapo, Peter Ottino died in a firefight with the SS, Karl Rupitsch, August Egger and Kaspar Wind were hanged in the concentration camp Mauthausen in October of the same year, Georg Kößner was shot dead in Glanegg in March 1945, and Richard Pfeiffenberger died in a punishment unit. Likewise, numerous family members and neighbors who had supported their children and friends were deported to concentration camps.
Brigitte Höfert, the daughter of Karl Rupitsch, developed on her own initiative with the historian Michael Mooslechner and the sculptor Anton Thuswaldner from Kaprun a suitable concept for a memorial to the events of 1944. The simple commemorative stone was intended to be placed in the courtyard of the castle Goldegg. However, the community of Goldegg decided against its placement. After half a year of publicly conducted debates, Andreas Huss, the chairman of the Salzburg Health Insurance Fund, then offered the site of the regeneration center as the location for the placement of the commemorative stone. On 8 August 2014, the commemorative stone was finally placed and today remembers the victims of the "Sturm".
