Memorial Plaque for Anna Bertha Königsegg

In the framework of the Salzburg project "Frauenspuren," the city of Salzburg installed a total of 17 bronze plaques at various locations in the city in 1999. In 2021, an extension followed; since then, 26 notable Salzburger women who played significant roles in the city's history are remembered. One of these memorial plaques honors Sr. Anna Berta Königsegg. The Venerable trained as a nurse in Paris and established a nursing school in Salzburg. Opposed to anti-National Socialist tendencies, she resisted the Nazi regime's plans to participate in forced sterilizations and wrote protest letters to the Gauleitung; she noted that people were being killed upon deportation from the clinics. Furthermore, she maintained that the nurses would refuse to assist with the deportations. Despite several incarcerations, they continued to resist the authorities and their policies. Thanks to her efforts, 17 lives were saved. Anna Berta Königsegg died on December 12, 1948. Today, in addition to the memorial plaque, a stumbling stone, a school, and a street also commemorate this resister, but her work has increasingly fallen into oblivion in public perception.
