Memorial Stone for Hungarian-Jewish Forced Laborers in Urbarial Wald Deutsch Schützen

In the Urbarial forest of Deutsch Schützen, approximately 500 meters east of the community, a mass grave for 57 Hungarian-Jewish forced laborers is located. The grave with the remains of the victims could only be rediscovered in August 1995 based on the statements of the survivor Moshe Zairi. After the opening of the grave, it was decided against reburial as it could not be guaranteed that all skeletal parts would be recovered. Consequently, the area was declared a burial site, the mass grave was sealed with a concrete cover, fenced in, marked with a commemorative stone, and dedicated in June 1996 with a religious ceremony.

The victims were Hungarian-Jewish forced laborers who had been brought to Deutsch Schützen for the construction of what is known as the Southeast Wall and who were executed by SS men on March 29, 1945, during a mass execution.
