Christoph Probst, kort een student in Innsbruck en lid van de „Weiße Rose“, een Münchner weerstandsorganisatie van jonge mensen, werd op 22 februari 1942 in München-Stadelheim decapiteerd. Op initiatief van de Oostenrijkse Hogeschool veranderde de Akademische Senat en de stad Innsbruck de locatie voor het universiteitsgebouw in Christoph-Probst-Platz. Op 16 maart 1994 onthulden rector Hans Moser en burgemeester Romuald Niescher (ÖVP) de naamplaat. De herbenaming wordt beschouwd als een interne actie, zodat de adres Innsrain 52 niet veranderde.
