Memorial Plate in Tschagguns "Flight and Memory"

During the National Socialism, the Montafon played a significant role as an escape route: numerous persecuted individuals attempted to flee to the neighboring Switzerland with the help of helpers, alone or in groups. Many escape attempts failed, not only because Switzerland was closing its borders more tightly and even expelling those who had already arrived – as in the case of Ernst Eisenmayer, who came from a Jewish family in Vienna. Near the Sulzfluh, he managed to reach the Prättigau together with his cousin Hans von Tschagguns, but was subsequently arrested by the Swiss police and transported back to Austria by train. After a second, again failed escape attempt, Eisenmayer was sent to the Dachau concentration camp, was later released, and managed to flee to England. Since 2022, a memorial plaque in Tschagguns remembers Ernst Eisenmayer and further escape stories, which was erected as part of the project „15 Orte – 15 Geschichten“.
