Memorial plate in Schruns "Vergeblich und vergessen"

The small farmer and mason Josef Tschofen was asked in the spring of 1945 by a woman for assistance in escaping from the hospital St. Josef in Schruns. With the help of acquaintances, they arranged for the woman to flee via Feldkirch to Liechtenstein. Shortly afterwards, Josef Tschofen and his brother-in-law Johann Vogt were arrested by the National Socialists. Tschofen died in the city hospital Feldkirch from injuries sustained during brutal interrogations. A trap had been set for the helpful men, as later turned out. Since 2022, a memorial plaque in Schruns remembers Josef Tschofen and the other escape helpers. It was erected as part of the project „15 Orte – 15 Geschichten“.
