Colfiorito, Taborišče

Campo di Colfiorito saw use in the year 1882, when
civil engineers built nine huts on the land known as "Campo San
Pietro".

It was intended as a firing range and
military shelter for squads and began operating from 1885.

In 1936 it was decided that
the military camp Colfiorito would be used as an internment camp, intended for the
reception, in case of need, of dangerous elements from political reasons or
military.

The installation capacity of the buildings
the presence of water and electricity, the possibility of restricting movement on
the area enclosed by a barbed wire, and the morphology of the land contributed to
the transformation of this military camp into a proper internment colony.

From July 1940, more than 170 political
interns were held in the camp. In spring 1941 the camp was expanded with the
construction of seven more wooden barracks, and from January to August 1943 many
interns arrived at the camp, up to 22 September 1943. A mass escape of
interns (more than 1200 people) occurred, of whom only 300 gave up their
escape.

After the earthquake of 1997, nine storage
areas became seven. At the site of the last two, there is today an auto
service. They underwent a thorough renovation, only one barrack remained as it
was, and that is the one that today houses the precious
natural history
museum of the
Colfiorito
park.

Details of the program can be seen in the attached images. Even though we are not
involved for known reasons (1, 2), as authors, researchers, as anti-fascists, and
as the society Jugocoord, we have done our part and can be proud of the result.
We will remain active and vigilant, so that the memory of the events is always
renewed and we never forget that the highest number of interned people and
foreign victims were in Colfiorito and the surrounding areas
of Yugoslavs!
