Arihova peč

On the 65th anniversary of victory over fascism, in May 2010, the partisan bunker under Arihovo pečje (on a board on the front wall it reads "wooden map") was restored based on preserved drawings and information about partisan Bodgan Mohor – Ston. On it there is an information board with a bilingual description of the events that took place here. The bunker stands at the place where it originally stood.

In the immediate vicinity, the locals have placed a simple wooden cross with engraved inscriptions: "Žrtev, 1945." The Union of Carinthian Partisans attached a memorial plaque with the names of the fallen partisans on the wall of Arihovo pečje above the bunker in 1986.

The wooden bunker under Arihovo pečje was the headquarters of the Local Committee of the Liberation Front for Beljak during the Second World War and provided shelter for up to 20 partisans. When German police and the "Volkssturm" attacked the bunker after the issuance at early morning hours on February 10, 1945, 8 partisans (4 women, 4 men) were killed. Only three managed to escape. In order to scare the population, the bodies of the exhausted partisans were dragged to Šentpetr, thrown off the edge of the road and later seized in Dravljah on the banks of the Drava. Only after the war were they exhumed and placed on the Šentjakob cemetery in a common grave.

In memory of the attack under Arihovo pečje, the Slovenian Sports Union, the Celovec Slovenian Alpine Society and the Slovenian Prosvetna Society organize an annual commemorative hike on the first Sunday in March.

The official opening of the bunker took place on May 8, 2010, and it is maintained by the Union of Carinthian Partisans.

In an unequal battle with the Gestapo, German police and Hitler's "Volkssturm" – among them were several locals with high Nazi positions – on the early morning hours of February 10, 1945, eight partisans and partisans were killed on the "Ravenci" under Arihovo pečje. These were: Mila Kmet – Andreja, Franja Markelj – Breda, Cirila Kržišnik – Tona, Marija Živalič – Mira, Ivan Kordež – Ivan, Ivan Bohinc – Džon, Franc Bogataj – Rok and, later that day, the 16-year-old courier Rudi Hribernik. Survivors were: Bogdan Mohor – Ston, Drago Druškovič – Dragec, Jože Košir – Jože and Ludvik Primožič – Milan.

The partisan memorial on the Šentjakob cemetery, the memorial plaque on the house of the Slovenian Alpine Society in Bleščeča, the memorial plaque on Arihovo pečje and the modest cross and restored bunker at the site of the tragedy remind us not to forget the magnitude of the fighters, who paid for the struggle for freedom with their lives.
