On July 22, the Slovenian nation rises — Laze fishing group discovered a memorial stone in Gostinci, on the ridge above Lepo drago, commemorating Pavle STROJINČ and Franc SMREKAR who fell during one of the last battles in the Janč area on February 16, 1945.
Pavle Strojinc, from Zadvor, had been involved in the national-liberation movement since 1941 and was already a member of the district committee of KPS and the district board of OF Dobrunje by 1942. In autumn 1942, he was interned in Italy but returned after Italy's capitulation and joined NOV. He was an activist for the Dobrunje district and constantly crossed the border to continue the national-liberation movement in the eastern part of our municipality — despite extremely difficult conditions due to Belgrade garrison posts. Throughout his work, he was fearless and exceptionally self-sacrificing. He fell as secretary of the district and member of the local committee of KPS.
Similarly, Franc Smrekar, from Podlipoglava, had been involved in NOB since 1941. He was a Partisan II group member and participated in all his battles. After Italy's capitulation, he became a courier and was a member of the famous courier station TV-2, which maintained contact under very difficult conditions between Dolenjsko, Steiermark, and Ljubljana. The Laze fishing group, with the help of the association of fighters and the municipal assembly, erected a stone above the spot, in the middle of the Janš woods, where these two young men fell during the last battle in deep snow just before liberation, leaving behind a simple memorial stone that will long remain as a reminder of self-sacrificing and good comrades — fighters. The discovery was attended by many people, and we are convinced that this commemorative feature will also not be neglected in the future.
