Partisan Memorial in front of the Peršmanhof Museum

The Partisan Memorial in front of the museum at Peršmanhof shows three forward-moving PartisanInnen standing on a pedestal, two men and one woman. Originally erected in 1947 in Völkermarkt at the cemetery of St. Ruprecht, the memorial commemorated 83 fallen Partisans of the costly partisan struggle on the Saualpe. In 1953, unknown individuals destroyed the memorial. The Republic of Austria refused – despite obligations under the State Treaty – to re-erect the figure group. Thus, the destroyed remnants remained in a warehouse in Kühnsdorf. On initiative of the then President of the Partisan Association, Janez Wutte-Luc, the figure group was erected in 1983 in front of the museum at Peršmanhof, which had been opened shortly before. Meanwhile, the memorial is no longer merely a remembrance of the fallen PartisanInnen; through its eventful history, it has also become a symbol of the history of the Carinthian Slovene community after the Second World War. Since 2019, it stands – together with the memorial in Völkermarkt – under monument protection.
