Soviet Memorial in the Soldiers' Cemetery Amras

Soviet architects designed the memorials of war graves for their relatives in Austria in a Stalinist style with very specific guidelines: square or rectangular form with a central "Hero Square," a victory obelisk, or some other massive monument, a Soviet star, and an inscription with patriotic and emotive content. The Soviet cemetery section in Innsbruck is enclosed by a hedge and is located in the Soldiers' Cemetery Amras, the largest war graves site in Tyrol. In the center rises a circular obelisk made of cast stone over a two-stage cubic granite base, crowned by a five-pointed Soviet star. Ten radially arranged communal graves made of artificial stone blocks bear the names of the Soviet citizens buried here in Russian. The grave stone for Iwan Emanatschenko, Juri Filipowitsch, Cyrill Schmutz, and Petro Wetraw, all of whom were executed in the Reichenau camp, stands in immediate proximity to the Soviet cemetery section.
