Gedenkstein Paul Speiser

In the Paul-Speiser-Hof at Freytaggasse 1-14, there is a memorial stone for the namesake of the residential complex, the social democratic politician Paul Speiser. Paul Speiser lost his position as a city councilor under the Austrofascist regime in February 1934. After his arrest at the city hall, he was interned in the Anhaltelager Wöllersdorf. Under the national socialist regime that came to power in 1938, he was arrested again after the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler in July 1944. The residential complex was named after Paul Speiser in 1948; on this occasion, a memorial stone with an inscription that honors Speiser's social and political work, as well as a portrait of the politician, was erected.
