Gedenktafel Richard Frey

The Döblinger Gymnasium remembers its former student Richard Frey with a memorial plaque on 21 February 2006. He was born on 11 February 1920 as the son of a Jewish family in Vienna and attended the Döblinger Gymnasium from 1930. A few weeks after the National Socialists seized power, he was expelled from the school in April 1938 due to the National Socialist Racial Laws. He completed his Abitur at the Gymnasium 9 in the Wasagasse, which was a so-called "Jewish collecting school".
In order to avoid arrest by the Gestapo, he fled from Vienna and reached China via indirect routes in 1939. There, he joined the Chinese resistance against the Japanese army, which had invaded the country. In 1944, he became a member of the Communist Party of China. He worked as a doctor on the front lines of the Red Army and additionally trained sanitary auxiliary personnel. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, he became a Chinese citizen. Frey specialized in the fight against epidemics and became an advisor at the Chinese Medical Academy. He died on 16 November 2004 in Beijing.
