Memorial Plate for Jura Soyfer with Relief

The memorial plaque for Jura Soyfer with a relief frame was installed in 1990 on the façade of the residential house at Heinestraße 4 in the 2nd district. The relief, designed by Helmut Kurz-Goldenstein, depicts contents from Soyfer's poetry as well as generally the themes of war, torture, and violence. The inscription on the plaque quotes a line from the "Song of the Earth," which Soyfer composed in 1936. Jura Soyfer was threatened by persecution from the NS regime due to his anti-fascist stance and his Jewish origin. During an attempt to flee to Switzerland, he was arrested on March 13, 1938, one day after the "Anschluss," in Gargellen in Vorarlberg, and deported to the concentration camp Dachau and later to the concentration camp Buchenwald, where he died in 1939 from typhus.
