Gedenktafel Johann Friedländer

On October 15, 2008, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the façade of house Wenzgasse 19, commemorating the Austrian army officer Johann Friedländer. Friedländer had lived in this house until 1942. Affected by the antisemitic policies of the national socialist regime, he was deported together with his wife to the Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1943. Shortly before the end of the war, Johann Friedländer was shot by SS-Oberscharführer Bruno Schlage during a death march near the Auschwitz concentration camp. The memorial plaque was sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Defense. The initiative for the erection of the memorial plaque came from Simon Wiesenthal, who encouraged the Military Historical Monument Commission to address this topic.
