Gedenktafel Friedrich Zawrel

On June 16, 2016, the Neue Mittelschule Hörnesgasse in the district of Landstraße was renamed in honor of Friedrich Zawrel. Friedrich Zawrel, who died in 2015 and was himself a student at Hörnesgasse, survived the mistreatment and murder of children in the NS-Fürsorgeanstalt Am Spiegelgrund in Vienna. In the twenty years prior to his death, Friedrich Zawrel, as a witness and survivor, played a significant role in informing the public about the medical crimes committed at the Am Spiegelgrund facility. The renaming took place during the school's 130th anniversary celebration, and is the result of the initiative by Sabine Schwarz, district party leader of the ÖVP Landstraße, as well as Rudolf Zabrana, deputy SPÖ district chairman, and was decided against the opposition of the FPÖ. A memorial plaque in the school, featuring a photo portrait, commemorates Friedrich Zawrel.
