Gedenkstätte Gestapo-Anhaltelager Karajangasse

In 1999 the memorial site Karajangasse at the Brigittenauer Gymnasium was reopened. There are two permanent exhibitions to be seen there: the exhibition "When Schools Became Prisons", designed by students and studentesses of the Gymnasium, as well as "The Lost Island", which was created by the Aktionsradius Augarten on the history of the local Jewish community.
The memorial site remembers the many Jewish women and men as well as political opponents of National Socialism who, in 1938, were packed together in the Anhaltelager of the Gestapo, which was located in the school, and then deported to the concentration camp Dachau. It also documents the results of a school project on the fate of the students of the Gymnasium who were expelled in 1938. 24 of them were murdered by the NS regime. Within the framework of a "Sparkling Science" project, the memorial site was supplemented with regard to a multiethnic student body.
