Memorial for the Victims of the Gestapo Vienna

On May 26, 2011, the memorial site for the victims of the Gestapo Vienna, which had existed since 1968, was reopened at the Leopold-Figl-Hof in Salztorgasse 6 in the first district. The Leopold-Figl-Hof is located at the former site of the Hotel Métropole, which was seized by the NS regime in March 1938 and converted into the Gestapo's main headquarters. Thousands of people, many of them actively involved in the resistance, were interrogated, tortured, and subsequently deported to concentration camps by Gestapo officers here.
The original "memorial room for the victims of the Austrian freedom struggle" had been established by the victim organizations. The renovation and thematic expansion in 2011 were carried out by the Documentation Center of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW). The new contemporary exhibition not only informs about the victims among the political opponents of National Socialism, but also about other victim groups of the Gestapo as well as about the persecution apparatus of the Gestapo, its employees, and their methods.
