The memorial cross was installed on March 13, 1951, in St. Michael's Church at Michaelerplatz 5, in a side chapel to the right of the entrance. The memorial cross had been located since 1945 in Dachau concentration camp and was brought to Vienna after the erection of a monument. Both the sponsors of the cross, both in Dachau and in the church, were the ÖVP Kameradschaft of the politically persecuted and confessors for Austria. Archbishop-Coadjutor Franz Jachym was involved at the opening in 1951.
