Ferdinand-Käs-Gasse

Ferdinand Käs was a professional soldier and trainer in the Austrian Federal Army. After the integration of the Federal Army into the German Wehrmacht as a result of the "Anschluss" of Austria to Nazi Germany, he served as an officer in the Wehrmacht. In the Wehrkreiskommando XVII, he formed a resistance group together with the officer Carl Szokoll, which was also involved in the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on 20 July 1944. In April 1945, he tried with Major Szokoll to prevent the execution of orders for the defense of the city of Vienna, broke through the front lines to the Red Army on 1 April ("Operation Radetzky") and established contact with the headquarters of the 3rd Ukrainian Front in the Semmering area. The plan largely failed due to betrayal in Vienna. In the Second Republic, Ferdinand Käs was significantly involved in the establishment of the executive branch.
