Memorial to the Victims of Fascism for Austria's Freedom 1934–1945

The memorial "To the Victims of Fascism for Austria's Freedom and Independence" was opened on October 24, 1981, in Vienna-Favoriten at the Reumannplatz. The laying of the foundation stone took place a year earlier, on October 11, 1980. It was designed by Heinrich Sussmann. The initiative for the memorial came from the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der KZ-Verbände und Widerstandskämpfer Österreichs. The sponsor of the memorial was a "Kuratorium zur Errichtung eines Denkmals für die Opfer des Faschismus". The memorial consists of various stone blocks, some with straight, some with slanted planes, each inscribed with different texts. On three stones, a dedication is inscribed, while on eight stones, concentration camps and execution sites are listed, where residents of the 10th district were murdered. The memorial also remembers the victims of Austrian fascism before 1938; this is indicated by the dedication period 1934–1945. By mentioning Auschwitz-Birkenau and Treblinka, it is one of the first memorials in Vienna to refer to the extermination camps of the NS regime. At the same time, the dedication remained limited to the persecution of freedom fighters; the systematic murder of the Jewish population was not addressed. The memorial was the target of several attacks, for example, in July 1982, when it was defaced with neonazi slogans.
