DENK-Memorial Marble Laneesch

On October 20, 2005, the former Jewish Beth Shul on the campus area of the University of Vienna was re-opened as a walkable monument. The National Socialists had desecrated the Beth Shul during the November Pogrom in 1938. After the Nazi rule, the building was used until 2000 as a transformer station. With the transfer of the area of the Old AKH to the University of Vienna, the former Beth Shul also came into the possession of the University of Vienna. The rectorate of the University of Vienna entrusted artist Minna Antova with the transformation of the Beth Shul. It was restored as far as possible in its original form. Additionally, an inscription embedded in the ground informs about the history of the building in Hebrew, German, and English languages, partly in Braille. The text can also be found on a metal plate. The floor of the Beth Shul is transparent and reveals several layers of time: the construction plan of the Beth Shul, a Gestapo letter from 1938, and a drawing of the transformer room. Frescoes are visible on the wall. Since 2009, in DENK-MAL Marpe Lanefesch, the "Book of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism at the University of Vienna 1938" is kept. The naming was carried out in cooperation with the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde. “Marpe Lanefesch” means in Hebrew “Healing for the Soul.”
