Memorial Johann Koplenig

The memorial for Johann Koplenig, the chairman of the KPÖ from 1927 to 1965 and co-founder of the Second Republic, was unveiled on March 11, 1988, at Höchstädtplatz in the 20th district. The location is in front of the Globus-Haus, opened in 1956, until 1992 the party headquarters of the KPÖ and the seat of the Globus newspaper, printing, and publishing company, where the most important media of the KPÖ were published. The memorial was designed by Fritz Weber and Jan Schneider. It consists of a stele, on which a bust of Johann Koplenig is placed, as well as four stone tablets arranged around it with inscriptions. Due to the redevelopment of Höchstädtplatz, the memorial was dismantled in 1994 and reinstalled after completion of the plaza in 1995. The reopening took place on April 27, 1995, the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of Austria's independence by the provisional state government, to which Koplenig belonged. The memorial is located in immediate proximity to the memorial for victims and fighters against fascist tyranny.
