Memorial for Rudolf Beer

The monument for Rudolf Beer was established in the Neubau district next to the Volkstheater in 1960. The initiative came from the then leadership of the Volkstheater. Initially, it was located in the foyer of the "Scala" theater in the 4th district, where it had been installed on April 23, 1950, due to the initiative of the theater management and staff. When the building at Favoritenstraße 8 was demolished, the monument was relocated to its current location. The sculpture was created by Franz Pixner. Rudolf Beer was a well-known actor and director who had been active in many theaters across Germany and Austria between 1912 and 1938. In 1933, he had to leave Germany due to the anti-Semitic policies of the Nazi regime and returned to Vienna. From 1933 until his death in 1938, he served as director of the Scala here. After the Nazis came to power in Austria, Rudolf Beer was arrested and severely mistreated. He took his own life on May 9, 1938.
