Memorial for Helpers of Victims of the Nazi Regime

On May 18, 1999, a metal sculpture was unveiled in the district of Leopoldstadt as an honorary memorial to helpers of victims of the Nazi regime. The monument was donated by the cultural association "Freunde des Karmeliterviertels." The design was created by Barbara Asimus and Berndt Anwander. The establishment of the commemorative column dates back to an initiative by ÖVP district councilors in 1995, which subsequently received support from all factions in the district council. Notably, when the monument for helpers of victims was erected in Leopoldstadt, where National Socialists had deported thousands of Jews to extermination camps, there were few signs of remembrance of the victims themselves at that time.
