Memorial for murdered Lovara, Sinti and Roma

The Cultural Space 10 association erected in 1999 in the Barankapark-Hellerwiese a glass memorial plaque for all Lovara, Sinti and Roma who had been deported by the NS regime in 1941 from here to concentration camps, where they were murdered. Additionally, the association planted a red chestnut tree. The memorial initiative was mainly carried out by Mongo Stojka, who himself had survived several concentration camps. The memorial plaque became a target of racist destruction in the following years; in 2002 it was completely destroyed. A new establishment of the memorial site took place in 2004 by the Cultural Space 10 association and the Austrian Roma cultural association. The glass memorial plaque was replaced by a red base stone and a standing metal plate with the dedicatory inscription.
