Freedom Fighter Memorial

The Freedom Fighter Monument at Atzgersdorfer Cemetery commemorates 23 resistance fighters and one female fighter. Their names are readable next to a relief showing two clenched fists on two plaques. The monument honors them as fallen for the freedom of Austria. Designed by sculptor Franz Pixner, the monument was unveiled on November 1, 1954. The KPÖ was the sponsor of the monument. In 2023, the city of Vienna dedicated the Freedom Fighter Monument as a Historical Grave and took over its preservation. The biographies of the people honored at the monument are very different; Karl Schaffhauser was killed by a Nazi on August 21, 1932. As the only woman honored, the monument pays tribute to Therese Klostermann, who was sentenced to death for "preparing high treason" in November 1943 and executed at the Vienna State Court on March 13, 1944.
