In memory of the victims from Hungary who were deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp during World War II, the Hungarian memorial was erected in the international memorial park at the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial Site and was presented to the public on May 10, 1964. The initiative was taken by the Embassy of the Hungarian People's Republic and the interests representation of Nazi victims in Hungary, and was realized by the architect Istvan Janaky and the sculptor Agamemnon Makrisz.
