In memory of the Sinti and Roma who were deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp during World War II, the memorial was erected in the international memorial park at the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial site and was presented to the public on May 9, 1998. The initiative was taken by the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma and the Austrian Roma Cultural Association.
