Memorial Site for a Downed Allied Bomber near Lasshofer Alm

At Lasshofer Alm in Lessach, a framed information panel and the remains of an aircraft part commemorate the crash of an allied military aircraft and its crew. During what was known as "Big Week" in February 1944, the Allies launched air raids against a number of German and Austrian armament industry centers. On February 25, 1944, several allied aircraft were shot down and crashed in the highlands of Hochgolling between Salzburg's Lungau and Styria. The plaque indicates that the bomber with serial number 42-30310 from Squadron 419 Group 301 was brought down by German fighters below the Kasereck at Grat Schneegrube-Burgerkar. Details regarding which aircraft and crew members were hit at specific locations vary according to source material and cannot be definitively confirmed. It is certain, however, that several British, Canadian, and American crew members lost their lives during the attacks, while a few managed to survive by parachute jumps.
