Memorial Cross for Pilots of a Downed Allied Bomber at Kasereck

The weathered wooden cross with a military helmet commemorates the crash of an allied military aircraft and its crew during what is known as "Big Week" in February 1944. In late February 1944, the Allies launched air raids against several centers of German and Austrian arms industries. On February 25, 1944, several allied planes were shot down and crashed in the mountainous area of Hochgolling between Salzburg's Lungau and Styria. Some crew members died, but others managed to survive by parachuting. They were later picked up and interned in prisoner-of-war camps. At an elevation of approximately 1900 meters near a trail at the Bueggerhütten, close to Kasereck (in the municipality of Lessach), the crash site of one deceased bomber pilot is remembered.
