Memorial Pyramid for Jewish Refugees at the Tauern Pass (Relief)

The memorial pyramid at Krimmler Tauern at an altitude of 2,634 meters commemorates approximately 5,000 Jewish refugees who were on their way to Palestine and arrived at this point near the Italian border around midnight. Ahead of them lay a steep descent into Kasern in the Ahrntal valley, as well as uncertainty about whether the Carabinieri would allow them to cross the border. It was also hoped that a ship would be waiting for them in Italy to take them further. In total, seven memorial pyramids were erected in 2013, describing the situation of Jewish displaced persons during their flight over the Alps in German, English, and Italian. Additionally, the memorial site "Givat Avoda" was expanded with a commemorative pyramid in 2021. To convey the likely feelings of the refugees during their Alpine crossing, each commemorative pyramid was adorned with a central keyword.
