Memorial Pyramid for Jewish Refugees at the Turnoff to the Plauener Hütte (Longing)

At over 2,000 meters, near the Plauener Hütte, there is the "Sehnsucht" (Longing) memorial pyramid. It commemorates the Jewish refugees who crossed the Tauernpass in order to reach Italy. From there, they would be transported to Palestine. The route via the Plauener Hütte was therefore chosen, because the Italian executive had increasingly pushed Jewish refugees back to Austria in 1947, which is why the route via the Heiligegeist-Jöchl was chosen as an alternative. In total, seven memorial pyramids were erected in 2013, which describe in German, English, and Italian the situation of the Jewish displaced persons at that time during their flight over the Alps. In addition, the memorial site "Givat Avoda" was expanded in 2021 with a memorial pyramid. In order to show the presumed feelings of the refugees during the crossing of the Alps, each memorial pyramid was equipped with a central keyword.
