Memorial Pyramid for Jewish Refugees at the Tauernhaus (Hope)

The memorial pyramid at the Krimmler Tauernhaus at 1,631 meters height remembers the approximately 5,000 Jewish refugees who set off in the early morning towards Italy, from where they intended to proceed to Palestine. At the Tauernhaus, men, women and children rested until 5:00 PM; in total, they still had to overcome roughly 1,000 meters in elevation to reach the pass crossing. In total, seven memorial pyramids were erected in 2013, which in German, English and Italian describe the situation of the Jewish displaced persons at that time during the flight over the Alps. In addition, the memorial site “Givat Avoda” was expanded in 2021 with a memorial pyramid. In order to show the presumed feelings of the refugees during the crossing of the Alps, each memorial pyramid was equipped with a central keyword.
