The Carl-Zuckmayer-Straße in the Flachgauer municipality of Köstendorf commemorates the Rhineland writer and outspoken opponent of National Socialism. Born in 1896, the dramatist and author of Jewish origin soon spoke out against the rising National Socialism. After the Nazis seized power in Germany in 1933, the author was forced to emigrate. He resettled in Henndorf am Wallersee in the state of Salzburg. Following the "Anschluss" in 1938, Zuckmayer was again compelled to emigrate. With his family, he fled via Switzerland to the USA, where he lived from 1941 to 1946 before returning to Switzerland, where he died on January 18, 1977.
