Memorial Plaque for Rosa Hofmann

As part of the Salzburg project "Frauenspuren" (Women's Traces), the city of Salzburg installed a total of 17 bronze plaques at different locations throughout the city in 1999. In 2021, an expansion followed; since then, 26 Salzburg women who played a significant role in the city's history are remembered. One such plaque commemorates the resistance fighter Rosa Hofmann. The seamstress, born in March 1919 in Wilhering near Linz, took over the leadership of a communist youth group in 1941 and was actively involved in the resistance against the NS regime. Only a year later, the Gestapo, likely through the use of an informant, dismantled most of the resistance groups and arrested the members. Among them was Rosa Hofmann, who was sentenced to death on charges of "Wehrkraftzersetzung" (undermining military strength) and "preparation for high treason" and was executed on 9.3.1943 in Berlin Plötzensee. In addition to the plaque at the former home of the family, a Stolperstein (stumbling stone) also remembers the engaged Hofmann. Furthermore, there is a memorial stone unveiled in 1947 in the Stölzlpark for Rosa Hofmann, which was expanded in 2019 to include a monument for the Salzburg women's resistance.
