Keyesstraße

In the Salzburg district of Liefering, General-Keyes-Straße commemorates General Geoffrey Keyes, the High Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief of US troops, and thus reminds us of the liberation of Austria, particularly Salzburg, in May 1945. The street runs alongside the Glanbach and a settlement also named after the general, whose residential buildings were constructed between 1950 and 1951. After the end of World War II, many buildings had been destroyed due to air raids during the final months of the war, and the US military occupied entire buildings, apartments, and hotels. Due to a dispute between the liberators and the city administration regarding these properties, the US authorities decided to construct housing facilities for US units and their families. After the withdrawal of US troops in 1955, the facility was handed over to the Republic of Austria, which allocated 212 apartments to Salzburg residents and 60 living units to the federal army.
