Franz-Peyerl Street

The approximately 400-meter-long Franz-Peyerl-Straße in the Salzburger Stadtteil Leopoldskroner Moos has honored since 1984 the first SPÖ-Landesparteiobmann of Salzburg in the Second Republic. Franz Peyerl, born in 1897 in Linz, was engaged in the Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei (SDAP), for which he – along with Karl Emminger, Josef Witternig, and Robert Preußler – was also incarcerated for three months during the Austrofaschismus. Even after the “Anschluss,” Peyerl, due to his earlier activities for the SDAP, was under observation and spent some time in custody there as well. After the end of the Second World War, the city of Salzburg appointed him an honorary citizen. It was also Peyerl who, in his position as Landeshauptmannstellvertreter, unveiled the commemorative plaque for the resistance fighter and National Socialist execution victim Engelbert Weiß in 1951.
