Anton-Kolig-Straße

In the Salzburg district of Aigen, a street approximately 50 meters long was named after the Expressionist Anton Kolig in 1969. Kolig, born in 1886 in then Moravia, studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna and at the Academy of Fine Arts. His first works were presented to the public in 1911. After the First World War, he rose to become a significant artist; thus, he was recruited in 1926 and 1927 to design Gobelins and mosaics for the Salzburg Festival Theatre. His frescoes also adorned the Salzburg Landhaus. However, these were later destroyed after the “Anschluss”. Many galleries removed his works from their collections, and even the mosaic in the Festival Theatre was destroyed. Anton Kolig was compulsorily retired in 1943 and spent the last years of the war in the Carinthian community of Nötsch, where he died in 1950.
