Adolf-Schemel-Street

In the district of Salzburg Süd, Adolf-Schemel-Straße has commemorated since 1967 the first Landeshauptmann of Salzburg after the end of World War II. Adolf Schemel was born in Salzburg on June 30, 1880. He entered the Landesdienst in 1903 and held various functions; he served from 1911 to 1922 in the Bezirkshauptmannschaft Salzburg, then worked as a member of the Gewerberat of the Landesregierung until 1931, and was subsequently appointed Referatsleiter for school affairs in the Amt der Salzburger Landesregierung until 1934. Under Austro-fascist rule, he was a member of the Länderrate; however, following the "Anschluss" on March 12, 1938, he was relieved of his offices and imprisoned. He spent seven months in custody but was never charged. Immediately after the end of the war, he was proposed by the U.S. occupation forces as Landeshauptmann and held this office until December 12, 1945. Adolf Schemel passed away on April 27, 1961.
