Johann Gorup was born on 19 June 1896 in Pernau bei Wels. He worked as a commercial employee in Salzburg and lived together with his partner Anton Vitek in Brodgasse 3 from 1936. Under the NS regime, both were likely denounced and consequently arrested on 15 May 1941 and sentenced to two years in prison each. Since both were sentenced under Paragraph 129 I b, which punished homosexuality, the Salzburger Volksblatt published their full names on 20 May 1941. Johann Gorup had to serve his prison sentence in the Bavarian prison Amberg and died there on 8 March 1943. His partner Anton Vitek was deported to the concentration camp Dachau on 4 July 1942 during his two-year prison sentence, where he was required to wear the green triangle. On 15 February 1945, he was stigmatized in the KZ Dachau under § 175 of the German criminal code, that is, as a homosexual, and had to wear the pink triangle. The Stolperstein for Johann Gorup, which was laid in Salzburg on 22 March 2012, was the first Stolperstein for a homosexual victim of National Socialism in all of Austria.
