Memorial for Soviet War Victims and Other Nations at the Municipal Cemetery

At the Salzburg Communal Cemetery, a memorial has been standing since 1949 for all those Soviet citizens and -citizens who were buried at this location between 1944 and 1947. The erection of the obelisk with a red star, hammer and sickle, was requested by the Soviet occupation forces. In the presence of all occupying powers, the State Governor Josef Rehrl unveiled the memorial on 20 June 1949. It is dedicated to all those people of the Soviet Union who, after the invasion of the German Reich, were taken into German prisoner-of-war camps or were deported to Germany for forced labor, and who were used under inhumane conditions, especially in agriculture, as well as in road and power plant construction. To this day, wreaths are laid and speeches are given annually during the commemorations for the victims of National Socialism also in front of the obelisk. Similar memorials can be found furthermore in St. Johann im Pongau and in Kaprun.
