Memorial Plaque for the Lexenfeld Camp (Part of the Lieferinger Cultural Walking Route)

The commemorative plaque installed in 2005 and renewed in 2019 at the current Herz-Jesu-Gymnasium remembers the so-called Lexenfeld camp, which was located on the grounds of the Herz-Jesu-Missionaries. They operated a school there since 1888. The NS regime shut down the operation in 1938 with the intention to use the buildings as "Nationalsozialistische Erziehungsanstalt" – where the future Nazi elite was supposed to be trained. This did not come to pass; instead, the complex was used as a barracks, and by 1943, 17 huts were constructed on site. After liberation in May 1945, the US authorities used these huts as a displaced persons (DP) camp. Many Displaced Persons from Ukraine and Poland, South Slavs and their women, as well as "Volksdeutsche" from Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Romania found temporary accommodation here. From 1953, the city of Salzburg managed the camp, where they set up a medical facility and kindergarten for refugees. In 1964, the property was returned to the Herz-Jesu-Missionaries.
