Memorial Plaque for Engelbert Weiß

Close to the Salzburg main railway station is a bronze memorial plaque commemorating the railway worker and resistance fighter Engelbert Weiß. The plaque is mounted on the façade of his former home at Engelbert-Weiß-Straße 20, fulfilling his wish, which he expressed in a letter to his daughter before his murder: „Make sure my friends do not forget me, and when you are once again happy, think of me and my lonely death. I die upright.“ In the summer of 1939, Weiß re-founded the Revolutionary Socialists of Austria (RSÖ) and became its leader. He also sought closer cooperation with the resistance group of the KPÖ, but a merger of the two groups did not come to fruition. Both groups were disbanded in February 1942, and their members were arrested. Weiß was sentenced to death for his activities and was murdered at the Vienna Landesgericht on 7 April 1944.
