Memorial Plaque on Memorial Site near Kreuzstadl Rechnitz

In the night of March 24th to 25th, 1945, approximately 180 sick and physically weakened Hungarian-Jewish forced laborers were murdered and buried near the Kreuzstadl in Rechnitz. Proceedings against the perpetrators were suspended due to the evidence available. The search for the mass grave, in order to be able to bury the victims in a dignified and Jewish ceremony, has remained unsuccessful to date.
The efforts to turn the Kreuzstadl into a memorial site, which had already begun in 1987, were intensified from 1991 by the initiative RE.F.U.G.I.U.S. On the initiative of the Burgenland sculptor Karl Prantl and the author Marietta Torberg, the ruin of Kreuzstadl was preserved from further decay and the adjacent land was purchased through donations. On November 14th, 1993, the memorial site Kreuzstadl was handed over to the Federal Association of Israelite Congregations, and a memorial plaque was unveiled on the northern wall of the memorial.
